USB 3 is now available in the market. This is a great development in file transfer speed given that USB interface to external memory devices are widely used for backup. Like any new technology, there will always be a number of disadvantages that comes with it. Nevertheless in this year, Consumer Electronics Show, the USB 3 was a blockbuster. The older USB 2 runs at 480 megabits per second, that is about 57 mbps. But this rating is just the ideal as most users can only get up to 30 mbps and that is reliant on file size. With the latest USB 3, it runs at 4.8 gigabit per second or 570 mbps although the test speeds we got were far lower than these numbers. We did get 60 mbps in several tests and the speed was quite reliant on file type and size. Our actual tests showed that the improvement in speed was about 50% and also 50% of processing time was reduced. We tested the USB 3 with different file sizes and with large-sized files we got around 85 mbps of varying transfer speeds.
